Craigieburn is a rural area in northwest Canterbury, on New Zealand’s South Island. The Craigieburn Range of mountains sits along the south bank of the Waimakariri River, just south of Arthur’s Pass. The area includes the Craigieburn Valley Ski Area and the Craigieburn Forest Park, and it is about 1.5 hours’ drive from Christchurch. Lake Hawdon lies just to the west.

In summer, several kinds of grasshoppers can be found in the Craigieburn Range.

The Craigieburn area covers a large region but has a very small population—only a few hundred people. It’s a popular place for outdoor activities like skiing, hiking, and enjoying nature.
