Conthey
Conthey is a municipality in the district of Conthey, in the canton of Valais, Switzerland. It sits on the right bank of the Rhône in central Valais, stretching from the valley floor up to the Diableret massif. The area covers about 85 square kilometers and sits at roughly 504 meters above sea level.
Population and people
Around 8,800 people live in Conthey (as of 2020). Most residents speak French, with small numbers speaking German or Portuguese. The community is mainly Roman Catholic, with minorities from other faiths and beliefs. About 18% of residents are foreign nationals.
History and geography
Conthey was mentioned as early as the year 800 and again in 1146. The municipality includes Conthey village (Plan-Conthey, La Place, Le Bourg, Saint-Séverin) and several nearby villages such as Aven, Erde, Sensine, Premploz and Daillon in the Derborence area. The region ranges from the valley floor to higher Alpine areas and includes wide forests, fields, and unproductive lands.
What you’ll see and do
The Conthey–Bourg / Saint-Séverin area is part of the Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites. A notable local tradition is Dôle Blanche, a white wine created in Conthey in 1922; since 1984 the name has become commonly used in the Valais canton.
Economy and living
The town has a mix of farming, manufacturing, construction, and services. Many residents commute to jobs outside the municipality, so Conthey both provides work and receives workers from elsewhere. Unemployment has been in the single-digit range in recent years.
Education and culture
A large share of residents has completed upper secondary education, and many have higher education. Conthey also hosts the Bibliothèque de Conthey, a local library with thousands of books and media.
Local life
Conthey is the center of a larger area that includes several surrounding villages, all connected by local roads and community services. The region blends rural life with growing services, helping residents enjoy the scenery of Valais along with convenient access to nearby cities.
