Climate of Barcelona
Barcelona has a Mediterranean climate with mild, wet winters and warm, sunny summers. The city stays fairly comfortable most of the year because of its sea breeze and coastal location.
- Temperature: The average daytime temperature is about 21.2°C, and nights average around 15.1°C. Winter days are usually 12–18°C with nights at 6–12°C. Summer days are often 27–31°C, with nights 20–24°C. Large temperature swings are rare.
- Seasons: Winter is mild and usually wetter than summer. Spring is pleasant but can be changeable. Summer lasts from late spring to early autumn, with hot days. Autumn is the rainier season.
- Rain and sunshine: Annual rainfall is under 640 mm, with about 55 rainy days per year. July is usually the driest month and October the wettest (around 90 mm). Barcelona gets a lot of sunshine, about 2,524 hours per year. December has about 4.5 hours of sun per day, while July averages around 10 hours.
- Sea and humidity: The average sea temperature is about 18°C. In winter the sea is around 13°C and in summer it rises to 24–25°C. Humidity is around 72% on average, higher in autumn and lower in midsummer.
- Wind and storms: Expect sea breezes in summer and westerly winds in winter. Strong eastern winds can bring heavy rain or floods on the coast. Thunderstorms can occur, especially in late summer and autumn.
- Snow and frost: Snow is very rare in the city. Frost and snow are more common in the surrounding hills and mountains. The coldest record is -8°C (night) in December 1962, and the hottest day on record is about 37.4°C (August 2010).
- Visiting tips: Spring (March–May) and autumn (October–November) usually offer the best weather—mild and comfortable. Summers can be hot, but the sea helps, and winters are generally mild.
