Christ the King Preparatory School (New Jersey)
Christ the King Preparatory School, Newark, New Jersey, was a private, coeducational Roman Catholic high school for grades 9–12. It opened in 2007 on the site of the former Our Lady of Good Counsel High School and later became Cristo Rey Newark High School as part of the Cristo Rey Network. The school motto was "The School That Works." In 2019–20, about 210 students were enrolled with 16.6 full-time teachers, a student-teacher ratio of 12.7 to 1. The student body was roughly split between Black and Hispanic students, with a small number of students from other backgrounds. Fr. Bob Sandoz, OFM, served as president, Fr. Gregory Gebbia, OFM, as principal, and Charles Syby as dean. Kevin P. Cuddihy was the founding principal. For 2016–17, the net tuition was $2,700 after a $7,100 corporate internship and $2,700 in financial aid per student. Students were required to complete service hours, attend retreats, and there was a student council. The Knights competed in the Super Essex Conference in sports such as basketball, volleyball, soccer, track, bowling, and more. On May 7, 2020, the Archdiocese of Newark announced that the school would close at the end of the 2019–20 school year due to lack of operational viability.
