China Film Giant Screen
China Film Giant Screen (CFGS) is a Chinese premium large-format cinema company. It used to be called DMAX, a name tied to its film technology. CFGS is owned by China Film Group Corporation and is seen as a competitor to IMAX.
CFGS’ format was developed by the China Research Institute of Film Science & Technology and China Film Group to provide a cheaper, domestically made alternative to IMAX and to use Chinese technology and intellectual property. It began commercial use in 2012.
In 2014, IMAX sued CFGS and related companies for allegedly stealing proprietary technology, focusing on Gary Tsui (Cui Xiaoyu), a former IMAX employee who started a competing business that became DMAX and later CFGS. A Canadian court ruled that Tsui had stolen the technology, and IMAX hoped for action in China.
The case was eventually settled, and IMAX canceled the lawsuit against Gary Tsui.
