Chatou
Chatou is a commune in the Yvelines department, Île-de-France, located about 14 km (9 miles) northwest of central Paris on the Seine. It covers about 15 square kilometers and has around 30,600 residents (2023). The town is known for its elegant mansions and for Maison Fournaise, a historic gathering place for Impressionist painters. Renoir painted Luncheon of the Boating Party there in 1881; the painting is now in the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. The Hôtel de Ville began as a private residence in 1730, and in 1875 part of Chatou joined with Le Pecq and Croissy-sur-Seine to form Le Vésinet.
On August 25, 1944, Nazi troops shot 27 civilians and Resistance members in Chatou, an event remembered as the Massacre des 27 Martyrs. Chatou is also home to the MACS MTO.
Transportation: Chatou–Croissy station on Paris RER line A serves the town. Education: eight public preschools, five elementary schools, and two junior high schools. Nearby Le Vésinet has Lycée Alain (a public high school) and Institut du Bon Sauveur (a private school).
