Charles McMurtrie
Charles “Jeff” McMurtrie (1 May 1878 – 9 August 1951) was an Australian rugby player who excelled in both rugby union and rugby league, making him one of the sport’s early dual-code internationals.
Born in Orange, New South Wales, he played as a forward in rugby union and represented Australia at the 1908 London Olympics, helping the Wallabies win the gold medal under captain Chris McKivat. After the Olympics, he switched to rugby league and joined Balmain, where he played from 1911 to 1915 (15 games, 5 tries). He also represented New South Wales in 1911. On the 1911–12 Kangaroo tour of Great Britain, McMurtrie played seven tour matches and scored three tries, earning Kangaroo No. 81, though he did not appear in any Tests on that tour.
McMurtrie, along with Peter Burge and Bob Stuart, is counted among Australia’s 17th to 19th dual-code internationals.
