Cercs
Cercs is a small municipality in Catalonia, Spain. It is located in the Berguedà comarca, within the Barcelona province, on the right bank of the Llobregat river above the Baells reservoir.
The area is known for a lignite-powered station that burns coal mined nearby in Fígols and Saldes. Cercs is connected by the C-1411 road, which runs between Berga and the Cadí tunnel.
Landmarks and history: The Pre-Romanesque church of Sant Quirze de Pedret gave rise to two painted ensembles (conjunts), now housed in the Solsona diocesan museum and in the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya in Barcelona. The remains of the Sant Salvador de la Vedella monastery can be seen on a hill in the middle of the Baells reservoir. The Cercs Mine Museum is located in the Sant Corneli colony within the Cercs area.
Demography: Cercs covers 47.4 square kilometers and sits at about 650 meters above sea level. As of January 1, 2025, the population is 1,236, with a population density of roughly 26 people per square kilometer. Residents are known as Cercorí (male) or cercorina (female). The Catalan pronunciation is typically given as ˈseɾks.
