Cao Bằng is a city in northern Vietnam. It is the capital and largest town of Cao Bằng Province, sitting by the Bằng Giang river and about 30 kilometers from the Chinese border (Guangxi).

Population and size: about 73,500 people (2019) and an area of roughly 107 square kilometers. The city today includes 8 wards and 3 communes.

History in brief: The Cao Bằng area means “high plateau.” It was a stronghold for the late Mạc dynasty after a 1592 defeat and later resisted the Nguyễn government in the 19th century. It’s known for the Battle of Cao Bằng, an early Việt Minh victory against the French. The town suffered damage in the 1979 Vietnam–China border war. Over the years, its administrative boundaries changed several times, and Cao Bằng City was officially established on September 25, 2012.

Today: Cao Bằng City is the administrative and economic center of the province.
