Cachapoal means “fertile valley” in Mapudungun. It is a village in the San Carlos municipality in Chile’s Ñuble Region. It lies about 20 km east of San Carlos and 22 km west of San Fabián along Route N-31. In 2002 it had 1,164 inhabitants. Some residents are descendants of the Pincheira brothers, a famous 19th‑century cattle-rustler group, and there are Mapudungun speakers in the village.
