Brochan Lom
Brochan Lom is a Scottish Gaelic song that humorously talks about porridge. The tune is lively and popular at Scottish dances and ceilidhs. It’s a type of mouth music (Puirt a beul), created to dance to when there are no musical instruments. The piece is a strathspey and is often played for the Highland Schottische and the Highland Fling. When played as an instrumental tune, it goes by many other names, such as The Orange and Blue, Katy Jones, Kitty Jones, and The Orange & Blue Highland Fling. The lyrics vary by tradition, but a common version jokes that the porridge was badly made and so thin it’s like gruel or sowans (the fermented liquid from boiled oat husks), a former Scottish food.
