Bongseonsa is a main temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. It sits in Jinjeop-eup, Namyangju, just east of Seoul in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. The temple was built in 969 by National Preceptor Beobin during the Goryeo Dynasty and was originally called Unaksa. In 1469 Queen Jeonghui renamed it Bongseonsa after her husband, King Sejo, was buried nearby. The name means “temple of revering the sage.” Bongseonsa has long had close ties with the queens of the Joseon dynasty. The temple has burned down and been rebuilt several times because of wars: the Seven Years’ War in the 1590s, 17th-century Manchu invasions, and the Korean War in the 1950s.
