Beausejour, Manitoba: a short overview

Beausejour is a small town in eastern Manitoba, about 46 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg. It sits near the Canadian Shield and Whiteshell Provincial Park. The name Beausejour comes from French and means “beautiful stay” or “a good place to stop.” There are a few stories about who named it and why.

The town was founded in 1874 and became an official village in 1908, then a town in 1912. It is surrounded by the Rural Municipality of Brokenhead.

In 2021, Beausejour had 3,307 residents living in about 5.42 square kilometres, giving a population density of around 610 people per square kilometre.

Beausejour’s economy centers on farming and tourism. It serves as a gateway to Whiteshell Provincial Park, bringing visitors to the nearby cottage country. The town hosts events such as the Canadian Power Toboggan Championships, the Double B Agricultural Festival, the Brokenhead River Agricultural Conference, and the Shades of the Past car show, which draws hundreds of classic cars. It has also hosted provincial curling championships and hockey events at the Sun Gro Centre.

A key piece of Beausejour’s history is the Manitoba Glass Works. Started in 1906, it was the first glass bottle factory in Western Canada. It later expanded to jars and bottles before closing in 1913. The site is now a Provincial Heritage Site.

Beausejour is the birthplace of Edward Schreyer, who served as Manitoba’s premier and later as Governor General of Canada. A local school is named in his honour. The town was also the setting for the film The Outside Chance of Maximilian Glick and its TV adaptation Max Glick.

Sports and community life are active in Beausejour. Local hockey teams include the Blades and the Beausejour Comets, and the Eastman Selects play nearby at the Sun Gro Centre, which also houses a curling rink.

Beausejour has two weekly newspapers, the Clipper Weekly and the Lac du Bonnet Clipper, and the local radio station CKBJ-FM 93.9.

The town experiences a humid continental climate, with warm summers and very cold winters.
