Water on Mars (band)
Water on Mars was a psychedelic rock and electronic band from Quebec City, active from 2004 to 2009. The group’s core members were Philippe Navarro (guitar, vocals, composer), Benoit L’Allier (bass), and Sylvain Harvey (drums).
Their music fused space rock, techno-funk, post-rock, and trip-hop, with drum loops and samples giving a pulsing electronic edge.
Debut album Mannah (2004) blend of space rock and electronic styles, recorded in a church on analog gear. It was released in Canada by Statik Records and later in Japan by Plop, earning strong reviews and radio play.
Second album Delta (2007) expanded the sound and ideas, exploring themes inspired by Faust. It featured guests and produced the track “Gizeh,” which did well on indie charts. Delta received favorable reviews and was nominated for Electronic Music Album of the Year at the ADISQ awards. The band performed at the Festival d’été de Québec in 2007.
Third album Labrador Skyline (2009) came with Harvey no longer in the band; Marco Grenier played drums on the release.
In 2017, Navarro’s songs were included in a compilation called Remixer le Québec.
