Battle of Svistov
Battle of Svishtov
The Battle of Svishtov took place on June 26–27, 1877, during the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878). It happened near Svishtov, on the Danube in what is now Bulgaria.
Two armies fought: Russia and the Ottoman Empire. The Russians, about 15,000 strong, were led by Generals Mikhail Dragomirov and Mikhail Skobelev (with Ivan Bryanov wounded in action). The Ottomans defended with roughly 13,000 troops under Ahmed Pasha and held the fortress at Svishtov.
On June 26, Dragomirov crossed the Danube in a fleet of small boats and attacked the Turkish fortress. The next day, Skobelev renewed the assault, and the Ottoman garrison surrendered. The Russian victory opened the way for further operations toward Nikopol.
Casualties were relatively light, with several hundred soldiers killed or wounded on both sides.
