Battle of Santiago (1660)

In March 1660, French buccaneers from Tortuga attacked the Dominican town of Santiago de los Caballeros. They killed about 25–30 Spaniards, looted the town, and took hostages. In the days that followed, several hundred Dominican cavalrymen gathered and set up an ambush in front of the French column. After the first two buccaneers were shot dead, a two-hour firefight began, and the Dominicans were forced to break. The French won the battle. Dominican losses are unknown; French losses were about 10 killed and 6 wounded. French commander: Delisle; Dominican commanders: unknown.
