Battle of Rovine

Date and place: 17 May 1395, near Rovine in Wallachia (likely by the Argeș River).

Belligerents: Wallachia led by Voivod Mircea the Elder vs. the Ottoman Empire commanded by Sultan Bayezid I. The Wallachians were supported by Serbian vassal princes, including Stefan Lazarević and Marko Mrnjavčević.

What happened: The Wallschen army attacked the Ottoman forces as Bayezid’s army invaded Wallachia. A famous legend says Mircea, dressed as a peace emissary, asked Bayezid to withdraw and offered safe passage back, but the Sultan refused and fought on. Wallachian archers played a crucial role in weakening the Ottoman attack. The battle may have lasted one day or a week, depending on the account. Caught in heavy fighting, both sides suffered many casualties, and eventually the armies withdrew. The Ottomans held their camp with Janissaries, which helped them later at Nicopolis.

Results and legacy: The outcome is disputed. Some sources view it as a Wallachian victory, others as an Ottoman victory, and some call it inconclusive. The battle stopped the Wallachian invasion for the moment but did not end Ottoman pressure on Wallachia. It remains a significant event in Romanian history and has been celebrated and described in poetry and chronicles. The Dečani chronicle notes the deaths of Marko and other leaders in the fighting.
