Balloon Land
Balloon Land, also known as The Pincushion Man, is a 7-minute 1935 animated short by Ub Iwerks in Cinecolor. It’s part of the ComiColor Cartoons series. The town of Balloon Land is made entirely of balloons, with balloon versions of famous entertainers among the residents.
The Pincushion Man, a non-balloon villain who pops balloons with pins, calls himself the Terror of Balloon Land. A boy and a girl explore the wooded outskirts despite warnings. The Pincushion Man spots them, steals entry into Balloon Land by tricking a guard, and pops a civilian.
The kids set off an alarm by triggering a dramatic scene with four crying babies, and Balloon Land’s residents scramble for safety. Balloon Soldiers form to fight the Pincushion Man. He shoots needles and pelts them with gum bullets and golf balls, but the townspeople fight back.
After a tense battle, a large ball of gum traps the Pincushion Man, and he is rolled away. He is finally knocked out of Balloon Land. With the threat gone, Balloon Land returns to normal, and the two kids share a kiss as the short ends.
