Demise: Rise of the Ku'tan
Demise: Rise of the Ku'tan is a medieval fantasy role-playing game for Windows, released in 2000. It was developed by Artifact Entertainment and published by IPC Software. The game shares the same universe as Mordor: The Depths of Dejenol, created by designer David Allen.
Plot: Lord Gherrick's city is attacked by demons rising from the Dejenol mines. After the assault is repelled, you are sent into the mines to locate and destroy the primordial evil at its center.
World: The game world is split into a town and a dungeon. The town has guilds, a merchant, a morgue and other locations, while the dungeon is filled with monsters to defeat during exploration.
Gameplay: Players create an avatar with race, class and starting stats, and grow stronger by earning experience and finding better weapons—either in the dungeon or from the town merchant. The game supports single-player play and up to 16 players in cooperative multiplayer.
Ascension: A beta version of an expanded edition called Ascension was released in 2011 by a fan group led by Decklin (Richard Whitwell).
Reception: At release, reviews were largely unfavourable. Critics said the game lacked a compelling story or a large, explorable online world, and they criticized the interface, graphics and sound. Some reviewers did praise the variety of equipment, spells and class combinations.
Awards: The game was nominated for Worst Game of the Year in GameSpot's 2000 Best and Worst Awards; Blaze and Blade: Eternal Quest won that category.
Development and availability: Development continued at least through August 2016, with version 1.06 build 721 released. The game can be purchased from the developer's website and runs on most Windows systems, including 64-bit versions. The official site offers extensive personal support through its forums.
