BBC Radio 1 Dance is the BBC’s digital radio station dedicated to dance and electronic music. It features a mix of presenter-led shows, DJ sets, and live or pre-recorded performances. The station began life on October 9, 2020, as an online-only spin-off from BBC Radio 1 on BBC Sounds. In September 2025 it started broadcasting on DAB+, the UK’s national digital radio platform, joining Radio 1 and other BBC stations on the digital spectrum. Some Radio 1 shows are also simulcast on Radio 1 during late-night slots or events, and a number of Radio 1 Dance programs are aired independently on the online stream.

Radio 1 Dance grew from BBC Radio 1’s long history with dance and electronic music, which helped bring club culture to a wider audience. The early years relied heavily on archive or repeat material and on simulcasts from Radio 1. Over time the station expanded with new, exclusive programming and a dedicated weekday schedule. Notable current hosts include Arielle Free (Radio 1 Dance Morning from 9 am to 12 pm), Connor Coates (a daily Belfast-based playlist show), and Danny Howard (Dance Party). Charlie Hedges presents Dance Anthems, a key slot that links with the main Radio 1 schedule, while the Residency concept—featuring rotating guest DJs—became The Residency on Radio 1 Dance in 2025. The station also carries long-running formats from Radio 1 such as Pete Tong’s Essential Mix and related dance shows, alongside newer material like Future Dance with Sarah Story.

In 2024 BBC reorganised Radio 1 Dance’s output in anticipation of a wider expansion. The schedule introduced exclusive daytime programs and more UK talent, including a morning show and ongoing live event coverage. The plan also set targets for new and emerging artists: at least 45% of music from UK artists and at least a third of daytime music from new artists, subject to regulatory approval. The channel’s aim is to offer 24/7 dance music with a focus on electronic styles such as house, techno and drum and bass, while boosting opportunities for up-and-coming DJs.

Radio 1 Dance has run a series of high-profile events and partnerships. Europe’s Biggest Dance Show, a joint broadcast with European stations, has been hosted from the UK by Danny Howard since 2021. The station also stages the annual Radio 1 Dance Weekend, with live or recorded sets from Ibiza and other venues. Partnerships have included clubs like Ushuaïa, Amnesia and Defected Records, and special broadcasts from venues such as 528 Ibiza. In 2024 Radio 1 Dance expanded to Malta, and in 2025 it continued to run live events in Ibiza, Malta and other locations through the Radio 1 Dance X brand, with sets broadcast on BBC Sounds and iPlayer.

Regulatory and market history has shaped Radio 1 Dance’s growth. When the service was announced, commercial bodies criticized it for not meeting public value tests. Ofcom initially decided an immediate Public Interest Test was not required, noting the online nature and content. Radiocentre challenged that decision in court, but in 2023 the High Court ruled in Ofcom’s favour, saying its approach was lawful and the impact on the market would be minimal. In 2024 Ofcom said the station’s schedule changes were not material enough to require a Public Interest Test. After a formal consultation, Ofcom approved the transition to full-time DAB+ service in July 2025, and Radio 1 Dance launched on DAB+ on September 9, 2025, marking a significant milestone for BBC radio.

Today, BBC Radio 1 Dance remains a key platform for dance and electronic music, presenting a blend of classic and contemporary tracks, major DJ sets, and strong support for UK artists and new talent. It continues to extend its reach online and on digital radio, while expanding live coverage of events and collaborative projects across the dance music world.
