Aygyl Tajiyeva
Aygyl Tajiyeva (27 August 1944 – 22 July 2009) was a Turkmen activist and politician. She was born in Mary, Turkmenistan. In 1990 she became a member of the Supreme Soviet for a Daşoguz Province district, and after Turkmenistan's independence she served in the Assembly of Turkmenistan. She opposed President Niyazov and his increasingly repressive policies. In 2002 she and her family were forced to leave Turkmenistan and she moved to Sweden as an exile, where she contributed to Radio Free Europe’s Turkmen Service. Her last interview was on 21 July 2009, which she cut short because she did not feel well. She died of a stroke on 22 July 2009 in Sweden, aged 64, and was buried near Stockholm on 24 July 2009.
