Austria sent 85 competitors (76 men and 6 women) to take part in 12 sports. They finished with 4 medals (0 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze), ranking 17th overall.

- Silver: Men’s sabre team fencing (Austria’s best fencing result to date; Otto Herschmann earned his second silver medal)

Sport highlights
- Swimming: Eight Austrian swimmers; bronze in the women’s relay; no Austrian swimmer reached finals in individual events; two reached semifinals. The team had won exactly one swimming bronze in each of the last three Olympics.
- Water polo: Debut for Austria; the team reached the final but did not medal after losses to Great Britain and subsequent rounds.
