Neke, Isi-Uzo
Neke is a town in Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State in southeastern Nigeria. It lies along the Enugu–Nsukka route, serving as a convenient stop for travelers between the two cities. Neke is bordered by Ugwuogo Nike to the south, Ikem to the east, Mbu to the west, Eha Amufu and UmuAlor to the southeast, Obolo-Eke to the north, Ogbodu-Abaa to the northwest, and Opi to the southwest. The town has about 55,000 people and a large land area. Historically, Neke’s people were known as fierce warriors who wielded economic influence over neighboring areas.
The town is divided into five main clans or districts: Ishienu, Akpani, Obeguaba, Umugwu, and Umuegwu, each made up of villages and kindreds. New settlements have grown on the land, including Agudene Neke, Onueme Neke, Uzo-Ohu Neke, Ugwuakparata Neke, and Mburuamanyi Neke. Recently, five autonomous communities were created: Akpani Autonomous Community, Uno-Neke Autonomous Community, Emeora Autonomous Community, Ndiagu Autonomous Community, and Mburu Amanyi Autonomous Community. Each has a traditional ruler called an Igwe.
Neke is located between Enugu and Nsukka, making it an access point for traders along that axis. It is part of Isi-Uzo Local Government Area in Enugu East Senatorial Zone (Isi-Uzo used to be part of Nsukka before 1996). In 1976, Chief Sam Nwaroh from Neke became Isi-Uzo’s first local government chairman and later served in the House of Representatives and became the first Igwe of Neke.
The people speak a distinct Igbo dialect that sits between Enugu and Nsukka dialects. Most residents practice Christianity, with Anglican St. Stephens and Catholic St. Patrick’s as the main churches. Traditional festivals include Onwa-Asaa, Aju, Igwokoji, Ote Mgbereke, Igede, and Okanga, which celebrate seasons and community bonds. The Oha title is held by the eldest man, and the Igwe is the town’s traditional ruler. Most residents are farmers, growing yam, palm oil, and cassava, which are sold at the Nkwo and Ore markets, with Nkwo being the central market. Postal code: 412105.
