Asad Majeed Khan is a Pakistani diplomat who has held several key positions for Pakistan. He served as Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States from 2019 to 2022, and before that as ambassador to Japan from 2017 to 2019. He also headed Pakistan’s missions to Belgium, Luxembourg, and the European Union. In December 2022, he became the Foreign Secretary of Pakistan, a position he held until August 2023.

During his career, Khan has held many senior roles within Pakistan’s Foreign Office, including Deputy Chief of Mission in Washington and various director-general posts. He has a Doctorate in International Economic and Business Law (LL.D.) from Kyushu University in Japan and has taught or spoken at academic institutions. He is married to Zunaira Khan and has two children.

In 2022, Khan was at the center of Pakistan’s Cypher Case. A diplomatic cable he drafted while he was ambassador to the United States was publicly discussed by former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who claimed it showed a foreign conspiracy by the United States to remove him from power. Supporters of Imran Khan saw it as proof of foreign meddling, while critics argued it was being misrepresented for political purposes. Khan stated that the cable was a routine diplomatic document and that its contents had been politicized. The controversy sparked discussions about the role of diplomatic communications in domestic politics.
