Angelina Wapakhabulo
Angelina Chogo Wapakhabulo, widely known as Mama Angelina, is a Tanzanian-born Ugandan social worker, HIV/AIDS activist and diplomat. She served as Uganda’s High Commissioner to Kenya. She is a founding member and co-chair of the United Way board and has worked to help communities through social programs.
In Kampala, she led the Market Vendors AIDS Project (MAVAP), turning markets into places where vendors and customers can trade and also check their HIV status and get treatment. She and United Way President Brian Gallagher represented United Way at the White House Summit on Malaria in Washington, D.C., on December 14, 2006.
Angelina was born and raised in the Iringa District of Tanzania. While studying at the University of Dar es Salaam, she met James Wapakhabulo, who would become Uganda’s Foreign Minister. They married and had four children. Their daughter, Josephine Wapakabulo, later served as Executive Director of the Uganda National Oil Company. Angelina and James were contemporaries of President Yoweri Museveni at Dar es Salaam University in the 1960s.
