Amami thrush
Amami thrush (Zoothera major)
The Amami thrush is a bird in the thrush family. It is found only on Amami Ōshima and Kakeroma island in Japan.
Appearance
It is a large, boldly patterned thrush with warm olive-brown to buff upperparts and white underparts with heavy black scaling. It has 12 tail feathers. The scaly thrush is smaller and has 14 tail feathers, and was once considered a subspecies of the Amami thrush.
Song
It has a cheerful song similar to the Siberian thrush.
Size
Length about 29–31 cm; weight around 172 g. Wings 16.4–17.3 cm; bill 3.1–3.3 cm; tarsus 4.1–4.5 cm.
Habitat and diet
Breeds in mature subtropical broadleaf evergreen forests in humid valleys. It eats invertebrates and fruit.
Breeding
Breeds in May and June, laying 3–4 eggs.
Population
The breeding population is estimated by the Amami Ornithologists' Club (NPO, Japan) by surveying the island every late March since 1999.
Conservation status
Least Concern (IUCN 3.1).
