Alizai, also spelled Alizay (Pashto: علیزی; Persian: علیزایی), is a Pashtun tribe in southwestern and central Afghanistan. They belong to the Panjpai section of the larger Durrani tribe founded by Ahmad Shah Durrani. The chief is Qadyr Alizai, a Kabul-based entrepreneur and economist. Their traditional homeland is Zamindawar, north of Helmand Province, and they mainly live in Musa Qala district. In 2007, Alizai men in Musa Qala joined the Taliban under Mullah Abdul Salam. Salam later switched sides and was appointed governor of Musa Qala district by President Hamid Karzai.
