Alexandra Millar, known as Alex, is a character in the British TV series Being Human. She is played by Kate Bracken. Alex first appears in Puppy Love (2012) and last appears in The Last Broadcast (2013). The character was created by Toby Whithouse.

Alex starts as a ordinary young woman on holiday with her father Brendan and her brothers Derek, Ryan, and Decky. In a cafe, she meets vampire Hal and they begin dating. For Hal, it’s his first date in over fifty years. Soon after, Alex is killed by the vampire Cutler, who is seeking revenge against Hal and tricks Hal into drinking Alex’s blood.

Alex returns as a ghost and moves into the house with Hal and his friends, the werewolf Tom and the ghost Annie. Together they try to take down Cutler and the ancient vampires called the Old Ones. In the end, Annie sacrifices herself to help defeat them. Alex struggles with being dead and unseen by humans, including her own family, who don’t know what happened to her. She tries to build a new family with Hal and Tom and searches for her unfinished business on Earth.

Meanwhile, Hal and Tom clash, which helps the devil, a powerful foe who thrives on their conflict. The friends face the devil, are led into dream worlds, and quickly realize those worlds aren’t real. They think they have defeated the devil and become human again, but it turns out to be another dream. They vow to face the devil again to save their world.

Alex and Hal’s relationship is complex. Hal’s darker side sometimes scares her, and he can push her away out of guilt for what happened to her. Bracken has said Alex is direct and brave, trying to look past Hal’s flaws, and she remains forgiving of his struggle with not drinking blood. Alex also forms a bond with Tom, treating him like a brother, and she mentors him in dealing with life, while Annie acts as a kind of “mother-mentor” to her, teaching her how to move objects as a ghost.

Alex stays very close to her family before her death—especially her father and brothers—whose loss she grieves after returning as a ghost. She works to cope with her new reality and uses her remaining time to help Hal and Tom.

Reception to Kate Bracken’s portrayal of Alex has been positive, with many noting her strong screen presence and the way she freshens the show’s dynamic. Bracken joined Being Human as a lead character in series 5, after initially appearing in a shorter arc, and was recognized for her breakthrough performance in 2013.
