Alcofrisbas, the Master Magician is a 1903 French short silent film by Georges Méliès. In the United States it was released as Alcofrisbas, the Master Magician; in Britain it was called The Enchanter. The film was produced by the Star Film Company and is numbered 514–516 in its catalogues. Méliès stars as Alcofrisbas. The name comes from Alcofrybas Nasier, a character in Pantagruel, and is a near-anagram of the author François Rabelais. A close-up shows a woman’s head, whose identity is unknown. The film features magical effects such as pyrotechnics, a waterfall, substitution splices, multiple exposures, and dissolves.
