Alabama Plating Company Superfund site
The Alabama Plating Company Superfund site is a 6-acre former electroplating facility in Vincent, Alabama. It operated from 1956 to 1986 and produced wastewater that contained heavy metals such as arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, cyanide, lead, nickel, and zinc. A treatment system was used to remove metals before discharging water into Spring Creek, but failures allowed contaminated sediment to build up in the creek and groundwater to become polluted.
The site was identified as a pollution source in 1970, and by 1980 the company had a permit to discharge treated water into Spring Creek. In 1986 the Alabama Department of Environmental Management ordered cleanup of contaminated sediment, with additional orders in 1990–1991 for groundwater cleanup and closing containment ponds. In 1991 the company sought insurance coverage for cleanup costs, but insurers refused and legal disputes followed. The EPA added the site to the National Priorities List (the Superfund) in September 2012 for remedial action, and cleanup work has been carried out under the Superfund program, with construction completed on June 21, 2018.
