Afrithelphusa
Afrithelphusa is a genus of freshwater crabs in the Deckeniidae family, found in the Upper Guinean forests of Guinea and Sierra Leone. The four species are:
- Afrithelphusa afzelii: Known from two specimens collected in 1796 in Sierra Leone; possibly extinct. Rediscovered in 2021 in Moyamba District by Pierre A. Mvogo Ndongo.
- Afrithelphusa gerhildae: Known from three specimens collected in 1957 in Kindia, Guinea. Population size is unknown and likely declined due to deforestation; currently listed as Data Deficient.
- Afrithelphusa leonensis: Known from three specimens collected in 1955 in Guinea; considered critically endangered. Rediscovered in 2021 on Sugar Loaf Mountain, just south of Freetown.
- Afrithelphusa monodosa (purple marsh crab): The best known of the four; new populations have been found since 1996. Fewer than 20 specimens have been collected, and the total population is likely under 2,500; listed as endangered.
