Adhwaytham
Adhwaytham (Non-duality) is a 1992 Malayalam political crime thriller directed by Priyadarshan and written by T. Damodaran. It stars Mohanlal, with Jayaram, Chithra, Revathi, Innocent, and M. G. Soman. The songs were composed by M. G. Radhakrishnan and the film score by Johnson. Produced by P. V. Gangadharan for Grihalakshmi Productions, it was released on September 3, 1992, and runs for 173 minutes.
The story shifts between past and present. In the present, Swami Amritananda arrives in Kerala to quell communal violence, and Lakshmi IAS is assigned to protect him. The Swami was once Shivaprasad, the rebellious son of Saraswathy, who grew up amid family strife and entered the Communist movement. A series of betrayals, crimes, and political scheming turns Shivaprasad into a hardened criminal, then to a corrupt temple chairman after he is released from prison. His ally Vasu and others get drawn into temple politics, while Lakshmi—now an IAS officer and temple administrator—faces constant tension with him. The past also reveals personal loves, rivalries, and tragedies, including the death of Vasu. After years of conflict, Shivaprasad leaves home to live as a spiritual teacher, becoming a respected figure.
In the present, Shivan’s enemies plan to kill Swami Amritananda during a temple festival. Lakshmi sacrifices her life to save the Swami. Enraged, Swamiji confronts Shivanas and his cohorts, killing them and seeking justice. In the end, Shivan accepts his past, urges unity, and asks people to stand together.
Filming took place in Kozhikode, Kerala, with art director Sabu Cyril creating temple sets inspired by the Guruvayur temple. The popular song “Ambalappuzhe Unni Kannanodu Nee” was composed by M. G. Radhakrishnan, with lyrics by Kaithapram Damodaran Namboothiri; recording occurred at Kothandapani Studio in Chennai.
Adhwaytham released on September 3, 1992, and became a big box-office success, running 125 days in Kozhikode.
