33rd Street–Rawson Street station
The 33rd Street–Rawson Street station is a local stop on the IRT Flushing Line, part of the New York City Subway. It sits above Queens Boulevard in Long Island City, Queens, on a concrete viaduct. The station is served by the 7 train at all times. It has two side platforms and three tracks, with the center track used by peak-direction trains during rush hours.
Exits and layout
Both platforms have stairs down to street level. The full-time entrance is at 33rd Street, with two stairs from each platform. A second, part-time entrance is at 34th Street, also with two stairs from each platform and a crossunder to switch directions. The exits run beneath the tracks.
History and naming
The station opened on April 21, 1917, as part of the Dual Contracts to expand subway service in Queens. It was originally associated with street names that included Rawson Street (and nearby Lowery/Bliss Streets). In 1998, the MTA removed old street names from signs, but in 2003 the New York City Council required that both old and new street names appear again, and the MTA later restored the old street names on signs.
Operations and upgrades
The IRT became the sole operator of the Flushing Line in 1949, with the line designated as the 7 in 1948. Over the years, platforms were lengthened to handle longer trains, and service patterns evolved as trains grew longer. The station is currently not ADA-accessible, but renovations are underway to add elevators. A contract to install two elevators at this station was awarded in December 2023, as part of a broader effort to improve accessibility across the system.
