2025 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament qualifying teams
The 2025 NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament featured 68 teams. Thirty-one teams earned automatic bids by winning their conference tournaments, while 37 teams were selected as at-large entrants by the NCAA Selection Committee.
Teams were seeded from 1 to 16 in each of four regions, with the overall field seeded from 1 to 68. Automatic bids go to conference champions, and the seeds reflect how each team was ranked within its conference tournament. Runners-up from some conferences later earned at-large berths.
Top seed: Auburn. Champion: Florida.
A notable controversy involved North Carolina’s inclusion, despite a 22–13 overall record and 1–12 in Quadrant 1 games. Bubba Cunningham, North Carolina’s athletic director, chairs the selection committee but recused himself from the vote on UNC.
West Virginia’s exclusion surprised many observers, and West Virginia’s governor threatened possible legal action, asking for an investigation into the selection process.
Brackets and regional seeds were determined by the selection process and published after the brackets were released on March 16. The original list indicated which teams won their conference tournaments and earned automatic bids.
Note: The First Four games are part of the tournament structure.
