The 2021 European Figure Skating Championships were planned for January 25–31 at Arena Zagreb in Zagreb, Croatia, hosted by the Croatian Skating Federation. Medals would have been awarded in men’s singles, ladies’ singles, pair skating, and ice dance. The event was cancelled by the International Skating Union on December 10, 2020, because of the COVID-19 pandemic—the first time the European Championships were not held since World War II. Zagreb’s arena had begun housing COVID-19 patients in November 2020.

The ISU had considered postponing or relocating the event, but ultimately cancelled it. It was the third ISU Championship cancellation of the season, after the 2021 Four Continents Championships and the 2021 World Junior Championships. On December 11, the Russian Figure Skating Federation announced plans to organize an alternative European competition open to European ISU member nations. Skaters would have to be at least 15 years old by July 1, 2020 and meet minimum technical element scores. Based on the 2020 results, nations could enter one to three entries per discipline, and many countries began naming their teams in December 2020. The non-European counterpart would have been the 2021 Four Continents Championships, which was cancelled in October 2020.
