The 2016–17 Conference USA men's basketball season had 14 teams. Middle Tennessee won the regular-season title, finishing three games ahead of Louisiana Tech. JaCorey Williams of Middle Tennessee was named Conference USA Player of the Year, and coach Kermit Davis was named Coach of the Year.

The C-USA tournament ran March 8–11, 2017 at Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama. Middle Tennessee defeated Marshall to win the tournament championship, giving the Blue Raiders their second straight tournament title. They earned the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, while no other C-USA team made the NCAA Tournament. Rice played in the College Basketball Invitational.

Regular-season play began in November 2016 and ran through early March 2017, with conference play starting in late December. Middle Tennessee clinched the regular-season title on February 26, 2017, by beating UAB.

Finals MVP was Giddy Potts of Middle Tennessee.

Coaching changes around the league in 2016 included: UTSA fired coach Brooks Thompson in March 2016; Steve Henson was hired in April. WKU coach Ray Harper resigned in March 2016; Rick Stansbury was hired in March 2016. UAB coach Jerod Haase left for Stanford; Robert Ehsan was hired in April 2016.

The tournament was limited to the top 12 teams in the conference standings.
