2016 FIFA Club World Cup
The 2016 FIFA Club World Cup, officially FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2016 presented by Alibaba YunOS Auto, was the 13th edition of the tournament. It took place in Japan from 8 to 18 December 2016, bringing together seven teams from six continental confederations plus the host nation's league champions. Real Madrid won their second Club World Cup title by defeating the hosts, Kashima Antlers, 4–2 after extra time in Yokohama. Atlético Nacional finished third and América fourth. The matches were played in two venues: Suita City Football Stadium in Osaka and International Stadium Yokohama in Yokohama.
Eight games were played, with a total of 28 goals and an attendance of 238,428 (about 29,804 per match). Cristiano Ronaldo was the top scorer with four goals and was named the tournament’s best player. Kashima Antlers received the Fair Play Award. Barcelona could not defend their title, having been eliminated in the 2015–16 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. The tournament trialed the use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology, including a notable decision in the semi-final between Atlético Nacional and Kashima Antlers.
Japan was confirmed as host for 2015 and 2016, with the 2016 schedule announced in July and a draw held in September to determine bracket positions. The event featured the standard squad rules, with 23 players per team and injury replacements allowed up to 24 hours before a team’s first match.
