2009 Guanajuato and Hidalgo shootings

On August 6, 2009, gunmen clashed with police in several Mexican cities. Police also seized money, drugs, and weapons during the attacks.

Hidalgo
- Hidalgo state police, already searching for missing federal agents, stopped four trucks carrying the attackers after getting a tip. The suspects opened fire and fled, sparking a 20-minute firefight.
- More than a dozen people were killed and 22 were wounded, including several police officers, in Pachuca, the state capital.
- The federal agents were found alive later in Mineral de la Reforma.

Guanajuato
- The cities of Silao and Irapuato saw grenade and heavy-weapon attacks on police stations.
- In Silao, a police station was hit with grenades, an AK-47, a 7.62×39 mm rifle, and an AR-15. Two people were killed and ten injured.
- In Irapuato, a bystander was killed and several officers were injured.
- Nine cartel suspects were killed in La Calera.

Ciudad Juárez
- In Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, a gunman killed a police investigator later that night.

Context
- Similar police station attacks had occurred in July 2009 in Michoacán by the La Familia Michoacana cartel after federal police arrested a top cartel leader.
- The Mexican drug war began in 2006 and has caused more than 10,000 deaths, including many police officers.
