At the 1997 World Championships in Athens, the United States originally won the Men's 4 × 400 metres relay. In 2009, they were stripped of the gold after Antonio Pettigrew admitted to using human growth hormone and EPO between 1997 and 2003. Some runners who only competed in the heats also received medals. Qualification to the final was simple: the first two teams in each heat plus the two fastest times advanced to the final.
