1993 Ryder Cup
The 30th Ryder Cup took place September 24–26, 1993 at The Belfry in Wishaw, Warwickshire, England (Brabazon Course). Europe was led by captain Bernard Gallacher and the United States by captain Tom Watson. The U.S. won 15–13, securing their second straight Ryder Cup. Europe led by a point going into Sunday’s singles, but Davis Love III clinched the U.S. victory by beating Costantino Rocca on the last hole, 1 up. This remains the last time the United States won in Europe (through 2023) and the last time the U.S. retained the Cup. The 1993 event was also the first Ryder Cup in Europe to be broadcast live in the United States by NBC. The Ryder Cup is a 28-match, match-play event; each match is worth one point, and a total of 14.5 points is needed to win (the defending team would retain the Cup with 14 points if the other side didn’t reach 14.5). Matches are played to a maximum of 18 holes, with ties after 18 holes earning each side a half-point.
