1977 Pittsburgh mayoral election
The 1977 Pittsburgh mayoral election was held on November 1, 1977. Incumbent Mayor Richard Caliguiri had become mayor about 10 months earlier after Pete Flaherty resigned. He left the Democratic Party to run as an Independent. Democrat Tom Foerster won the Democratic primary in a contest against Frank Luccino and Jim Sims. Caliguiri decided to run again after a dispute with Foerster over environmental and transit issues, but because the primary filing deadline had passed, he ran as an Independent. Republican Joe Cosetti had little impact in the heavily Democratic city. In the general election, Caliguiri won with 68,902 votes (47.9%), Foerster received 62,860 votes (43.7%), and Cosetti had 12,205 votes (8.5%). A total of 143,967 votes were cast.
