1965 in science and technology featured several important milestones.

- Spacewalk: On June 3, astronaut Ed White became the first American to walk in space during NASA’s Gemini IV mission. He spent about 23 minutes outside the spacecraft, showing that spacewalking was possible.

- Mars photos: NASA’s Mariner 4 probe flew past Mars in July 1965 and sent back the first close-up pictures of another planet. The photos showed a cratered, desert-like world with very thin air.

- Other progress: The year also saw advances in computing, medicine, and engineering that laid the groundwork for faster scientific breakthroughs in the years to come.
