1961 Baseball Hall of Fame balloting: Elections followed the post-1956 system. Baseball writers voted on recent players only in even-numbered years. The Veterans Committee met privately to consider executives, managers, umpires, and earlier players. It selected two center fielders, Max Carey and Billy Hamilton, both noted baserunners. Two new inductees brought the total to 86. The induction ceremony was held July 24, 1961, in Cooperstown, New York, with Commissioner Ford Frick presiding.
