The 1919 Aberdeenshire and Kincardineshire Central by-election was held on 16 April 1919 for a seat in the British House of Commons. The vacancy occurred because Coalition Conservative MP Alexander Theodore Gordon died on 6 March 1919 at age 37, from heart failure after influenza. Gordon had been the MP only since the 1918 general election.

The Times noted that public opinion was swinging against the coalition government of Lloyd George and Bonar Law, with Asquithian Liberals trying to take advantage of the mood. In the 1918 election, the Liberal candidate John Henderson had come close to beating Gordon in this area, and Henderson was expected to stand again. The coalition leaders were prepared to back him, giving him a “coupon” similar to the 1918 election, but the local Conservatives decided to run their own candidate, L. F. W. Davidson. By the writ date of 24 March 1919, Henderson had stood down, and the local Liberal Association chose Major Murdoch McKenzie Wood, a barrister and former Gordon Highlander who had run unsuccessfully in Ayr Burghs in 1918, as their candidate.

The campaign ended up a three-way race, with Labour’s Joseph F. Duncan also contesting. Duncan’s presence threatened to split the anti-Coalition vote. Ultimately, the Coalition-backed candidate, Wood, won the seat with a narrow majority when he defeated Davidson.

Election results:
- Wood (Liberal) — 4,950 votes (37.5%)
- Davidson (Unionist/Coalition) — 4,764 votes (36.1%)
- Duncan (Labour) — 3,482 votes (26.4%)

Wood’s victory gave the Liberal side a 63.9% combined Liberal and Labour vote, a clear setback for the Coalition just after their 1918 landslide and amid other by-election defeats. The Times noted that the Coalition coupon, once a symbol of support, was proving to be a liability in this climate. Wood became the MP for Aberdeenshire and Kincardineshire Central.
