Geography
Zarıslı is a village in the Shusha District of Azerbaijan. It serves as the center of the Zarisli rural administrative district. The village sits about 1,528 meters above sea level in the central part of Shusha. It is located at coordinates roughly 39.7172°N, 46.6761°E. Nearby are the ruins of the Zaris fortress.
History
In the 19th century, Zarıslı belonged to Khurshidbanu Natavan, the Azerbaijani poet who was the daughter of the local khan. During the Soviet era, the village was part of Shusha District in the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic. In 1992, during the First Karabakh War, Armenian forces occupied the village and it was destroyed. After the 2020 trilateral agreement, the village came under Russian peacekeeping control. In September 2023, Azerbaijani forces regained control of Zarıslı.
Population
Before the occupation, the village was inhabited exclusively by Azerbaijanis. Historical population figures show:
- 1912 Caucasian Calendar: 1,139 people, mostly Azerbaijanis listed as “Tatars.”
- 1921 census: 363 people, mostly Azerbaijanis listed as “Turks.”
- 1986: 194 Azerbaijanis.
