Wicd
Wicd (Wireless Interface Connection Daemon) is an open-source network manager for Linux. It handles both wireless and wired connections with a simple interface. The project started in 2006 as Connection Manager and later became Wicd. It only auto-connects to networks you’ve saved, and it won’t automatically connect to unknown networks. Wicd supports encrypted wireless networks through wpa_supplicant, and you can create templates to connect to many different networks and encryption types supported by wpa_supplicant.
Wicd has two main parts: the daemon (runs as root) and the user interface (runs as a normal user), which talk to each other via D-Bus. This design lets you change networks without needing the root password and allows other front-ends, such as wicd-qt, to be built. Front-ends are available for GNOME, Xfce, Fluxbox, and other desktop environments.
Wicd is available in several Linux distributions, including Ubuntu and Zenwalk. Debian dropped support after Python 2 reached end of life, and Gentoo and Slackware have also dropped it. The stable release is 1.7.4 (January 25, 2016). Wicd is written in Python, runs on Linux, and is released under the GPL. The project is hosted on Launchpad.
