Wahnapitae First Nation
Wahnapitae First Nation is an Anishinaabeg community in Ontario, Canada. It is located on Wahnapitae 11, a 10.69 km2 reserve on the northwestern shore of Lake Wanapitei, just north and west of Greater Sudbury. The people signed the Robinson Huron Treaty in 1850.
The name Wahnapitae comes from the Anishinaabemowin word Waanabidebiing, meaning "that place where the water is shaped like a tooth," referring to the lake’s shape when seen from above.
As of 2025, the First Nation has a total population of 799 people, with 104 living on reserve. The community is governed by a five-member elected council, including Chief Larry Roque and councillors Bob Pitfield, Terry Roque, Marnie Anderson, and Jamie Roque. Wahnapitae is part of the Waabnoong Bemjiwang Association of First Nations.
The community has several facilities and developments, including Hiawatha's Restaurant and Marina (formerly Rocky’s) with five cabin rentals. The Norman Recollet Health Centre, a nurse practitioner clinic, opened in 2019. A 20,000 square foot sound stage was completed in 2025. The First Nation has mining agreements with Vale Canada, Glencore, and KGHM.
For postal and telephone services, Wahnapitae is considered part of Capreol, a nearby Greater Sudbury community, and for statistics it is included in the Greater Sudbury Census Metropolitan Area.
