WCFO
WCFO (1160 AM) is a listener-supported radio station in East Point, Georgia that airs Catholic talk and teaching. Owned by Atlanta Catholic Radio, the station is affiliated with the EWTN Radio Network and mostly carries EWTN programming. It’s one of two Catholic stations in the Atlanta area; the other is WAFS 1190 AM, which carries Relevant Radio programming. WCFO operates at 50,000 watts by day but must reduce to 160 watts at night because 1160 AM is a clear-channel frequency reserved for KSL in Salt Lake City. The station uses a directional daytime antenna and broadcasts from a four‑tower array near Austell, Georgia.
History in brief
The 1160 frequency in Atlanta has a long, complex history. It began as a construction permit in 1987 (call sign WMLD) and signed on October 9, 1994 as WERD, going through many format changes and periods off the air. It aired classic R&B, briefly toyed with rap, then sports, and later classic country. In 2001, the nearby 1170 AM switched to oldies after being purchased by Billy Corey, and in 2006 the 1160 station changed to WCFO with a business‑talk format. It later switched to general talk, hosting programs like Imus in the Morning. In 2010, WCFO became the flagship for Georgia State University sports. In October 2018, JW Broadcasting sold WCFO to Atlanta Catholic Radio for about $750,000; the sale finalized on October 12, 2018. Today WCFO operates as a Catholic talk outlet under the branding The Quest Atlanta.
