Vladimir Lert (born June 12, 1979) is a Latvian filmmaker, screenwriter, and producer from Riga. He studied directing at Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara and acting at the International Actors' School in Los Angeles. After finishing his studies in 2006, he moved to Kiev, Ukraine, where he shot several low-budget films and took part in the Kiev Film Festival. He began his Hollywood career as an assistant producer and also acted in a number of films. He directed Rejection (2011). In 2016 he wrote and directed St. Valentine's Night, a film known for its improvisation during filming. His third feature, Tevye's Daughters, was released in 2017. The movie is based on Sholem Aleichem's Tevye's Daughters, which inspired The Fiddler on the Roof. Some scenes were shot at the Pyrohiv Outdoor Museum in Ukraine to recreate old Ukrainian life and folklore. The screenplay is based on Memorial Prayer, a play by Grigori Gorin, and the plot follows Tevye the Dairyman as he tries to marry off his seven daughters. Tevye's Daughters was shown at the Rhode Island International Film Festival and, in 2018, was nominated for a Golden Globe in the foreign language film category.
