Uppsala Municipality
Uppsala Municipality is a local government area in Uppsala County, in east-central Sweden. The municipal seat is the university city of Uppsala.
Size and people: The municipality covers about 2,234 square kilometres (about 2,183 km2 of land and 52 km2 of water). As of 30 June 2025, it has about 247,000 residents, with a population density of around 113 people per square kilometre.
Location: It lies in the historic province of Uppland.
History: Uppsala Municipality was formed in the late 1960s and early 1970s by merging many smaller municipalities. Knivsta Municipality split off in 2003.
Politics: The area has long shown a mix of conservative and liberal influences. The municipal council has 81 seats (as of the 2010 election).
